Glen Halterman, the Mayor of Parowan, is one of the most generous
and well-respected citizens of the community. He is also the
largest and most successful sheepherder in the Parowan Valley.
After serving in the Navy during the WWII atomic weapons testing
missions in Bikini & Aniwetok, he returned to the U.S. and
spent the next 8 months in a V.A. Hospital due to radiation
illness. He returned home to Parowan to discover that the U.S.
Government was testing nuclear weapons in his own backyard.
Three Ladies:
Frankie Lou, Mary Gae and Glenna have lived in Parowan all of
their lives. The three friends compiled lists of their neighbors
who became ill with various forms of cancer such as Leukemia,
Multiple Melanoma and Autoimmune illness. These courageous women
rallied to inform the rest of the country as to the plight of
their community by writing several letters to government officials
and health organizations, submitting stories and informing the
press of their death records.
Mumfords:
Jerry and Gaelynn shared
similar childhood experiences, waking to bomb explosions,
witnessing the loss of fellow classmates and donning radiation
badges from the men in white suits. The pair,
who dated in High School were reunited at their 20th class
reunion, married and returned to live in Parowan.
Janet
Janet was born and raised on a farm in Parowan. She recalls
the black clouds that blew into their land as she and her
father worked the fields. After being told by doctors that
she had six months to live, she has battled and survived cancer
for the past decade. She speaks about her struggle and the
loss of her 5-year-old-son to cancer.
Bruce:
Bruce has lived in Parowan most of his life and currently
suffers from chronic Leukemia. He lost his brother, a soldier
at the Nevada Test Site and his mother to cancer. He details
the horrific experiences of his brother at Ground Zero.
